Carl Lynx Going to World Masters
A veteran women's soccer team with players primarily from West Carleton is preparing for the tournament of a lifetime: the 2013 World Masters Games in Torino, Italy.
The players, between the ages of 45 and 56, formed in January. They fundraised through winter, joined a league recently, and devotedly take to the field every Monday night, joined every so often on the sidelines by supportive husbands and impressed kids.
The women sometimes even play against kids their kids' age, or younger, team founder Donna Price said, groaning audibly. But make no mistake - the sisters are doing for themselves.
"After so many years of being there for our kids when they were playing sports, this is now more about us," Price said. "It's something we are doing for ourselves, which is nice."
Coached by Tino Tolot, whose system is geared toward passing and tight defense to counter younger and faster players, Price said her teammates are catching on.
"It's no longer about running a lot more and accomplishing a lot less. It's about running a lot less and accomplishing more."
The team is called Lynx and plays in the National Capital Industrial Soccer League. But their eyes are firmly on the prize in Italy, a tournament without national teams just various teams from around the world. The games promote sport among people over the age of 35. Roughly 30 sports are presented, with competition open to everyone including disabled athletes.
"We believe that through our involvement we may also serve as a catalyst and inspiration to other women and girls to pursue lifelong involvement in sport as a way of life and being as we have done in our own lives," said Price, who's coached teams in various sports.
Two other similar women's teams are from Kanata. To get to the games the team is aiming to raise $25,000, about $1,000 per player. They'll use the money to hand out exchange gifts and cover some travel expenses.
