Soccer returns for the NCISL
The NCISL returned to action last night with the start of their 7 v 7 league. Normally, the NCISL would play 11 v 11 soccer but the COVID 19 pandemic scuttled those plans for the 2020 season.
40 adult teams will be participating in the 2020 season which is being scheduled entirely on the artificial turf at the Richcraft Recreation Complex in Kanata. Each team will play a ten-game schedule subject to continuing guidance from health authorities.
League President, Tim Baigent, was thrilled to see the league back in action on a warm and sunny Thursday evening but explained how much extra work was needed to get the 2020 season off the ground.
“When the pandemic hit us in March, the Board of Directors and league staff moved into crisis mode to do all they could to ensure that a season could be held. After nine additional board meetings and many hours of volunteer work, it’s a relief to finally see that extra effort payoff for our members”
Twelve men’s teams were in action last night and President Baigent was also quick to credit his team organizers.
“Our team managers have also done a tremendous job in getting their team prepared in such difficult circumstances.”
In planning for the 2020 season, the NCISL chose to follow strict guidelines provided by Ontario Soccer and the City of Ottawa to ensure that players, officials and spectators were protected from the COVID 19 virus. All attendees at the NCISL games have to be recorded by a field marshal and the laws of the game have been modified to minimize personal contact.
President Baigent also recognized the support that his organization received form the soccer authorities.
“Occasionally, the governing bodies come in for some criticism from the grass roots but this year both Ontario Soccer and the Eastern Ontario District Soccer Association showed their value in advising us on how to operate through the pandemic. “added President Baigent. “We certainly wouldn’t be playing if it wasn’t for them”
The NCISL season continues next Monday when 10 women’s teams start their season.

A field marshal has to record all players, officials and spectators who attended the games with a view to being able to contract trace if needed in the future.
